What you need to know
Members of the OPSEU Pension Plan can earn full pension service if they enter into an arrangement with their employer to temporarily reduce their regular working hours. Members are also able to buy back periods when they worked on a temporary part-time work arrangement, subject to any applicable limits under the Income Tax Act.
This option supports members who participate in flexible working arrangements, such as job-sharing, so they can maximize their pension.
Temporary Part-Time Work Arrangements
What is a temporary part-time work arrangement? A temporary part-time work arrangement is a period of reduced work hours that meets all of the following criteria
How to apply
Apply to make full or reduced contributions during the arrangement If you are thinking about participating in a temporary part-time work arrangement with your employer, it is your choice to make contributions during the arrangement based on your regular hours or on your reduced hours, and should be indicated on the Temporary Part-Time Work Arrangement Contribution/Buyback Application (OPTrust 1030) form. This form must be completed by you and your employer and the employer must submit it to OPTrust before the start of the arrangement, whether or not you elect to contribute based on your regular hours or on your reduced hours only.
Apply to buy back service after the arrangement has ended If you elected to make pension contributions only on your reduced hours, you can complete the Temporary Part-Time Work Arrangement Contribution/Buyback Application (OPTrust 1030) form after your arrangement ends to apply to buy back the service for the hours you did not work.
