What you need to know
Your membership in the Plan ends when you leave your job.
When we receive notice of your termination from your employer, we will send you a termination package explaining your options.
Depending on your age and pension service in the Plan, you may have a number of options.
If you have been involuntarily terminated without cause and meet certain requirements, you may be eligible for grow-in benefits.
If you have an outstanding buyback balance, you will have the option to complete your buyback by making a lump sum payment in order to increase your pension service.
Access to your Online Services account ends when we receive notice of your termination from your employer. If you start to receive a pension from OPTrust, your account will be reactivated.
We work to handle your service request in a timely manner. See our Service Delivery Standards.

Pension options when your employment ends
When you leave your job with an employer that participates in the OPSEU Pension Plan, you may have one or more options regarding your pension.
How to start the process
Establish your termination date (with your employer, if applicable):
Your employer must complete the Grow-in Rights Certification (OPTrust 3013) form, if you are eligible for grow-in benefits.
Inform your employer and OPTrust if you plan to retire.
Your employer completes the Termination of Membership (OPTrust 1012) form and sends it directly to OPTrust.
Provide OPTrust with copies of these documents, if they are not in our files:
If you have a spouse
Your spouse’s birth certificate
If you do not have a spouse, birth certificates for any eligible children.
If you are separated or divorced, a certified copy of your court order, separation agreement or family arbitration award if it requires you to divide your pension with your former spouse.
Review and update your beneficiaries.
Resources
Bridging an unreduced pension
If you receive a notice of layoff from your employer before you reach your earliest unreduced retirement date in the OPSEU Pension Plan (the Plan), you may qualify to continue to earn pension service until you are eligible to retire and receive an unreduced pension.
Deferred or commuted value transfer
OPTrust members who leave their jobs before retirement often have an important decision to make. Once they receive their Termination Statement from OPTrust, many members will have to choose between one of two option.
Applying for an OPTrust disability pension
If you are a member of the OPSEU Pension Plan (the Plan) and still employed but can no longer work due to a permanent physical or mental disability, you may qualify for a disability pension or a special disability refund from the Plan.
